This work is the result of a collaboration between Dora Kreković, Petar Krivić, Ivana Podnar Žarko, and Mario Kušek from the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), and Danh Le Phuoc from Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), reflecting a strong collaborative effort between the two institutions.

The paper offers a comprehensive survey of strategies to reduce communication overhead in the IoT-edge-cloud continuum. It provides:

  • A detailed overview of state-of-the-art techniques for minimizing communication overhead

  • A qualitative evaluation and comparison of communication protocols and data reduction strategies

  • A roadmap for developing scalable, efficient IoT solutions capable of real-time processing while mitigating network congestion

  • Insights into integrating protocols and reduction strategies across the layers of the IoT-edge-cloud continuum, with attention to the constraints posed by resource-constrained IoT and edge devices

This research contributes to the advancement of efficient, communication-aware IoT system design and offers practical guidance for both academic and industry stakeholders.
