Dr. Fehmi Ben Abdesslem (RISE)

Dr. Fehmi Ben Abdesslem (RISE) visited UNIZG-FER between November 12th and 14th, 2024. On November 12th, he delivered a public lecture at UNIZG-FER, organized by the Croatian Section of IEEE which was, among other participants, attended by the members of the IoTLab involved in the AIoTwin project. On November 13th and 14th, Dr. Ben Abdesslem conducted two interactive sessions for IoTLab members, focusing on advanced research topics relevant to the AIoTwin initiative. These sessions were also streamed online for the broader AIoTwin consortium. In addition to the lectures, Dr. Ben Abdesslem participated in collaborative research discussions with IoTLab members, exploring joint opportunities between IoTLab and RISE. These meetings emphasized applying lecture themes to enhance the research directions of AIoTwin and IoTLab.

Invited talk: “Battery-Free IoT”
This invited talk demonstrated how the growing demand for Internet of Things (IoT) devices has driven significant interest in sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, particularly in power management. It explored the emerging field of battery-free IoT, focusing on devices that harvest ambient energy from sources such as solar, RF signals, and vibrations to operate without batteries. The underlying technologies enabling these energy-harvesting systems, their advantages over traditional battery-powered IoT, and the challenges in reliability, scalability, and energy storage were discussed. Real-world applications in smart cities, healthcare, and environmental monitoring were highlighted, showcasing the potential of battery-free IoT to revolutionize the future of ubiquitous computing.

Lecture: WebAssembly for IoT
In this lecture, the transformative potential of WebAssembly (Wasm) in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem was explored. The fundamentals of WebAssembly, including its architecture, benefits, and its role in enabling high-performance applications across diverse devices, were covered. Real-world applications and use cases demonstrating the effectiveness of Wasm in enhancing IoT solutions were reviewed. By the end of the lecture, a solid understanding of how to leverage WebAssembly to improve efficiency and performance in IoT applications was provided, setting the stage for the practical implementation that followed.

Lecture: Hands-On Practice of WebAssembly for IoT
Building on the knowledge gained from the previous day, this hands-on practice session provided participants with the opportunity to apply WebAssembly concepts in real-world scenarios. Practical exercises designed to deepen the understanding of integrating WebAssembly into IoT devices were undertaken. Participants were taught to create, compile, and deploy WebAssembly modules while working with various IoT platforms and tools. Collaboration and innovation were fostered in this interactive environment, empowering attendees to develop and troubleshoot their own Wasm applications. By the end of the session, participants were equipped with the skills needed to harness WebAssembly effectively for their IoT projects.
